South Carolina

LighthouseSouth Carolina, the Palmetto State, where Sassafrass Mountain is its highest point, has become a golfing destination because of coast developments like Hilton Head and Kiawah Islands.

Seafaring visitors travel through South Carolina on the Intercoastal Waterway that stretches north and south along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Although the coast has wildlife refuges for birding and national forests for hiking, backpacking, fishing, and camping, it also is home to Myrtle Beach, the famous resort area which is bustling from early spring to late fall because of its great climate. Myrtle Beach offers a lot of water sports and recreational activities during the day and restaurants, music venues, and clubs for the night time visitor. South Carolina has excellent beaches offering water sports, fishing, swimming, or beachcombers. It also has an island culture which existed for two centuries.

River DamHistoric Charleston has unique architecture perfect for walking tours. Columbia, its capital city, and Greenville offer visitors interesting venues for tracing the Native American, colonial, and Civil War histories and experiencing the southern mountain culture. Throughout the state, visitors can find charming bed and breakfasts, lodging for any price range, and camping.

The rugged terrain of western South Carolina is perfect for hiking, backpacking, fishing, and hunting. Drivers interested in scenic day trips can find several choices in South Carolina. Travels can access Columbia and Greenville by regional airlines and by driving interstate highways.
