Ohio

Rock and Roll Hall of FameOhio, the Buckeye State, is on the southern coast of Lake Erie Coast. The Ohio's Lake Erie Coast has a lot of variety for the vacationer, including Sandusky, Cedar Point, and the Lake Erie Islands. Boaters enjoy cruising Lake Erie and mooring at Put-in-Bay for an evening of entertainment and fun. Cleveland, another interesting community along the Lake Erie coast, has a new vitality with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which is just north of Akron and the Pro-Football Hall of Fame. The terrain between Akron and Cleveland is beautiful and inviting for the hiker and nature enthusiast. Traveling south from Akron through Berlin, Wooster, or New Philadelphia, visitors encounter many Amish farmers who sell their crafts, produce, and cheese at farm markets throughout the region. Although Ohio is famous for The Ohio State University in Columbus, there are many fine private and public colleges throughout the State, including Miami, Kent State, Kenyon, Defiance, Ohio University, Wooster, Oberlin, and Bowling Green. Ohio has a unique history that begins with the pre-historic mound builders whose settlement near Chillicothe, gateway to the Appalachian Mountains, is open to the public. The mound builders created ancient trade routes that became the foundation for all major transportation routes including the interstate highway system. Ohio was a major front in the French and Indian War when General Mad Anthony Wayne established Fort Defiance on the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers near orchards planted by Johnny Appleseed. Additionally, Ohio, the birthplace of presidents, has a rich industrial and transportation history which were important to the settling of the west. The Ohio River was the water "highway" for pioneers and trades people to move from the east to the Mississippi River.
