Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Dakota, the Peace Garden State, is the geographical center of North America. Lewis and Clark, who spent more time in North Dakota than other regions, found this territory fascinating on their voyage of discovery. In 1863, North Dakota was opened for homesteading where herds of bison where found. They became nearly extinct, but made a comeback and can be found today in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is made up of three locations near Medora, Sully's Hill National Game Preserve, and near Devils Lake.

North Dakota has outdoor adventures including hunting, trapping, and fishing on open water for chinook salmon, northern pike, and bass or ice fishing for yellow perch. North Dakota also offers plenty of places for viewing wildlife. A 30-pound catfish was caught in the Red River. In addition to fishing on Lake Sakakawea visitors can opt for swimming, sailing, boating, windsurfing, canoeing, and bird watching. Bird watching also is popular at Cross Ranch State Park where there are terns and piping plovers. At Ransom State Park visitors can paddle along the Sheyenne River or go horseback riding along the trails. Hikers can explore the North Country National Scenic Trail and the Little Missouri State Park. Snow mobiling is available around Abraham Lincoln State Park. Bicyclists can do the loop around Theodore Roosevelt State Park. The Turtle Mountains offer all types of winter sports, including downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding, and snow mobiling.

The Little Missouri National Grass Land is the south unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park for camping and hiking. It is just miles from Beach, home of the song Home on the Range.
