Travel Alert--Remember to take passports to any of the Caribbean, Central American, Mexican, and Canadian locations. Even children traveling with their parents need passports.
When
planning a trip to Mexico, it is hard to decide where to go in this rugged nation south of the United
States . There are the twin volcanic landmarks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl , many beautiful beaches with fabulous lodging including, those with powdery sand of Cancun , Mayan ruins ,
and rolling breakers of the Pacific , mountains, and places like Puerto Vallarta where old and modern Mexico meet. Wherever visitors decide to go in
Mexico,
they should bring a passport,
camera, water, sunscreen, Spanish to-English dictionary, and sturdy walking
shoes because there is a lot to see. Because there might be a language barrier
if the visitors cannot speak Spanish, they should rely on guides for tours. Throughout Mexico,
there is a sense of timeliness or agelessness it is almost as if it is at a crossroads of time between the 21st Century and 17th or 18th Centuries.
Visitors can stand in ancient
ruins near modern, luxurious hotels and watch donkeys following the
lead of a gentle adult or frisky child down a well-traveled trail. It is
a mix of the Third
World and First World.
Mexico's coastal
regions are beautiful, whether on the Gulf of Mexico or Pacific . The Baja Peninsula separates the Pacific
Ocean and Sea of Cortez, Gulf of California and is bathed by the sun. People,

Baja Peninsula as
well as northwestern Mexico
and its beautiful coastline
with its rugged and rocky terrain. Northwestern Mexico has three states: Chihuahua , Durango , and Sonora . These states have a lot of industries, rich agricultural valleys where peanuts, cotton, sugar cane,
tobacco, vegetables, and fruit thrive because of irrigation, and
spectacular natural landscapes that include mountains, canyons,
plateaus, and buttes that comprise desert landscapes like paintings. The
northwestern Mexico
has some of the most beautiful deserts in the
world. Whitewater canoers can paddle from near Redford, Texas to Lajitas,
Texas in about eight days (See Texas) along the Rio Grande
River .
While canoeing, curious canoeists can pull their canoes
on to the Mexican bank, climb over the craggy rocks on the banks and
along the washes to the interior, and see some extraordinary scenes that
are like pictures out of the National Geographic .
For example, in the spring, the desert vistas are
dotted with green, flowering cacti and desert wild-flowers. Birding also
is very interesting in this area. Taking
a train, rather than driving, is a good way to pay attention to the
scenery of northwestern
Mexico
. The Chihuahua/Pacifico Railroad (ChePe) offers visitors perfect views of the Copper Canyon region and Sierra Madre Mountains . Auto-tourists , who want an exciting drive, can access northwestern
Mexico by Highway 2 from
Mexicali
in
the west or Juarez in the east. Tourists need to leave the industrial cities
of the north and travel south during the daylight hours down Highway 15
along the Gulf of California coast or south on Highway 45 through the
interior of Chihuahua and Durango. Places to visit in northwestern
Mexico
include:

Northeastern Mexico borders southeastern
Texas
and the
Gulf of Mexico
. This region is
industrialized with manufacturing and oil refining plants. The
Gulf
of Mexico
Coast
in this region tends to be marshy.
However, for the auto-tourist taking day trips from southern
Texas
will find the towns in this
region interesting for shopping, especially for hand-made crafts, and a
contrast.
Visits to
Mexico
are incomplete without
stopping in Mexico City and touring the surrounding area. Flying into
Mexico City
and taking advantage of
commercial tour guides are really the best ways to visit Mexico City and the area. Similarly, staying at major hotel chains guarantees visitors an interesting and relaxing
vacation.
Mexico City
is in a huge valley that is
60 miles long and 30 miles wide; however, two snowcapped volcanoes stand
out in the landscape south of
Mexico City
. The history of
Mexico City
goes back to the ancient, pre-Columbian nomadic Indians. In the early 16th
Century, Spanish explorers found the area in their search for gold.
Today, Mexico City
has a population of over
9,000,000 with over 20,000,000 in the metropolitan area. It is an urban
community where the most casual to formal visitor will find something
exciting to do and see including, visiting the Historic District , Pink Zone with elegant restaurants and shopping, and Federal District with its museums, parks, zoo, and galleries.
Other places to see are the National Palace , Great Temple , Metropolitan Cathedral , National Pawn Shop , and Zocalo , a 10 acre cement square. Other places to visit in the
Mexico City
region are:
The Pacific Coast of Mexico is often called the Rivera
of North America . Each resort community along the coast
is unique and provides a vacation
destination . Most visitors fly to the coast cities or
arrive by boat commercial cruiser, yacht, or sailboat. However,
towns to see along the coast are accessible by car along
Highways 40, 15, 200, 134, and 185 driving after dark should be
avoided in this region. Costal resort communities for vacation destinations are:

Central Mexico , the heartland of Mexico, is the best place
to go looking for Mexico's Spanish heritage.
It has several colonial cities, however, the most famous is Guadalajara. This destination features parks, museums,
cathedrals, a cultural institute, rodeos, bull fighting,
concerts, and theater. Many Guadalajara hotels offer tennis and golf. Because few residents of central Mexico speak English, visitors should plan on taking the guided tours or hiring an English speaking guide. Southern Mexico reflects the Mayan and Mixtec civilization and seems closer to the
Central American cultures. Although there are many interesting
cities in southern Mexico, visitors to the
area should use Veracruz, on the Gulf of Mexico, as a base from which to explore the historic ruins in the region and
learn about the culture.
Veracruz, founded in 1519,
has a castle and museums to visit as well as being a gateway to
the rest of southern Mexico. Although the beaches are somewhat
muddy and known for sharks, they are fun to stroll along while
listening to the mariachi bands, watching the dancers, and
sampling the seafood.
On the Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Peninsula , Cozumel , Playa del
Carmen and Cancun draw visitors from all over the world. Cancun has many five-star resorts with all the amenities as well as
other resorts for those who want an inexpensive get-a-way. Most
visitors arrive on the Yucatan
Peninsula via the Cancun
International Airport or cruise ship. Once there they can
shop for handcrafted silver, indigenous art, visit ruins, and go sightseeing on the
Yucatan Peninsula away from the resorts
and see the other quaint communities. Visitors to the
communities on the Yucatan can go fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, waterskiing, wind surfing, boating, sailing, sea kayaking, parasailing, and swimming.
Other trip ideas:
Start in San Diego, California before going to the Baja.
Once in the Yucatan , travel down to other Central American countries. Take a cruise that visits Mexican ports.
