Kentucky

Horse Grazing on BluegrassAlthough Kentucky, the Bluegrass State, is synonymous with horse racing, mint juleps, Louisville Sluggers, and aged whiskey, it offers its visitors many vacation venues from agri-tourism and cultural tourism to art, history, folk lore, and outdoor adventures. From its northern boundary on the Ohio River, Kentucky offers boaters opportunities to enjoy cruising from historic Louisville to the other quaint towns with their unique moorings and restaurants featuring American country cuisine. Louisville, known for Churchill Downs, Fort Knox, baseball bats, and excellent lodging also is the pioneers' gateway to the west and starting point for Lewis and Clark who explored the Louisiana Purchase. Southern and Eastern Kentucky have many distinct areas to visit along I-75 and beyond. Specifically, vacationers can visit Kentucky's heartland waterways and Big South National River and Recreation Area, which Kentucky shares with Nashville Skyline at NightTennessee. Adventures can hike, golf, kayak, boat, canoe, fish, and observe elk. Travelers, who are interested in culture and history, enjoy visiting Berea College and learning about Appalachia crafts. Western Kentucky shares the Mississippi River with Missouri and is a focal point for river history and lore. In western Kentucky, outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the extensive Kentucky State Park system, historic destinations, marinas, camping sites, and access to great hunting and fishing. Because Kentucky has a mild climate, golfers like its long golfing season on lush courses. Its name, Bluegrass State, is for both the rich grass that thoroughbred horses enjoy and for the wonderful bluegrass music that is a rich tradition and heard at many festivals throughout Kentucky.
